Uncommon Scents

A Return to a Lost Art

Our sense of smell is our first sense. Before we are able to distinguish sounds or sights, we smell. In fact, our sense of smell is the only sense that plugs directly into the brain.

Smell induces memory. It can soothe or stimulate. It can awaken and, as I found out, it can help us to sleep.

Essential oils are extremely strong. They are not really oils at all, but are, in most cases, created by the steam distillation of a plant, herb or flower. The result of this distillation is a very potent extraction. Originally, these essential oils are what perfumers used.

Artificial smells besiege us these days. Chemical laboratories work up new synthetic odors to make our cars smell new, imitate flowers or cover up odors. Take perfumes. Generally, I hate perfumes. Most of them are synthetic and leave me gagging. Many are the times that I have stepped into an elevator only to be assaulted by a thick, nauseatingly sweet artificial stench. Or I have too often wandered into a sundry or souvenir shop to have a hundred different odors from smelly “scented candles” rush unbid into my nostrils.

Perfumes weren’t always like this. Originally, perfumes used the natural scents of flowers, herbs and plants—the essential oils.

Uncommon Scents uses only natural essential oils. We do not use any artificial ingredients in the creation of our blends. Our oils come from all over the world, some of them from regions that have been creating oils for hundreds of years.

At Uncommon Scents we recognize and respect the power of smell. With that in mind we have created two potent blends, Sleep Drops and Heaven Scent.. Both of these have been tried and tested for over a decade and now are available online.

The Story of Sleep DropsSleep Drops

Fourteen years ago I returned from India after spending several months in and around a spiritual ashram. I felt nourished and revitalized and came home filled with energy.

Soon I  returned to my work–giving psychic readings in various hotels in the Catskills, something I had been doing for seven years. I was astounded: people seemed to be drawn to me. I was doing a booming business every day. And, while I appreciated the business, I was so buzzed that I found it difficult to sleep.

My sleeplessness went on for a week or two. Then I decided to do something about it. Sleeping pills were out of the question. I do not like to take medication. I decided to look into essential oils, the building blocks of the art of aromatherapy.

I spent several days researching the qualities of these oils. There are virtually hundreds of them. I paid particular attention to those essential oils that aided in sleep.

Of course, I smelled each of these oils. If I didn’t like the smell of one, I simply wouldn’t use it. Finally, I arrived at a blend of five or six that constituted the first “Sleep Drops”.

I put a couple of these “Sleep Drops” on my pillow. And I slept like a baby. Moreover, I found that the potency of these drops lasted for four or five days.

That was fourteen years ago. Since then I have revised and refined the formula. Since then, countless children and adults at an arts camp where I work have enjoyed sleep with these drops where they are dispensed by the infirmary. Now I have decided to release the Sleep Drops to the general public.

Sarvanada’s Sleep Drops consist of seven essential oils in a carrier base oil such as sunflower oil or jojoba oil. Under no circumstances are they, or any other essential oil, meant to be ingested. Two or three drops on a cotton ball or pillow case are all that is needed. The smell is what does it.

Sleep Drops come in an amber bottle with a built in dropper dispenser. Usually, a few drops will last several days and one bottle will last

several months .

You may order Sleep Drops for fifteen dollars plus two dollars postage and handling. You will be amazed at the results.

                                                Some first hand experience:

”When it came to getting a good night's sleep, I was the winner of the Marcel Proust award. We're talking chronic insomnia. When I first heard about Sarvananda's Sleep Drops  I didn't believe they could help me, since I have no sense of smell. Turns out the messages get to the brain anyway! Long story short--they work! I put a little dab on a hankie once every week or so and spread the hankie on my pillow, and voila--we have liftoff! Mister Sandman, move over. Ambien, eat your heart out. Through the magic of Aromatherapy, it's on to Dreamland for the best sleep I've had in years!"

Heaven Scent

The "Anti-Poo"

Many years ago, I wanted to create a blend of essential oils that would stimulate the imagination and intuition. I spent a good deal of time researching the various oils that were reported to do that. I would, of course, smell each of them and immediately eliminated the ones I did not like.

By process of elimination I arrived at blend that I call Heaven Scent.

It is a unique and refreshing smell. And it is loved even by those who hate perfumes. In fact, for a long time I made it as a gift to friends as a unisex perfume for those who hated perfumes.

Then I discovered that a few drops sprayed in a smelly area would transform an offensive odor into a delightful one.

I have used it with my cat’s litter box. It has transformed the smell of tobacco smoke and beer. And, it is entirely natural, made up of a blend of many essential oils.

Heaven Scent comes in a cobalt blue bottle with an easy pressure spray top. It is available for fifteen dollars plus two dollars shipping and handling.

Sarvananda's Homesick Remedy

It may sound wacky, but seventeen years ago, Sarvananda developed a blend of flower essences that helped campers deal with their homesickness.

Flower essences are a branch of homeopathy. They are part of what is called "vibrational medicine" in that they deal with quality rather than quantity. Thus, a flower essence contains a miniscule quantity of the original flower but, in a very unusual way, has an impact. Unlike essential oils, flower essences can be ingested. In fact, you could probably drink a whole quart of a flower essence without doing any harm.

Of course, skeptics might claim that homeopathy and flower essences work because people expect that they would. But veterinarians have been using homeopathy and flower essences with great effect on animals. And Fido probably isn't too susceptible to a placebo.

The "Homesick Remedy" contains eight different flower esssences. It is part of the protocol at the arts camp where Sarvananda has been working for the past eighteen years. And hundreds of kids have enjoyed its effects.

If you would like to read more about it, you may check out an issue of Vibration Magazine, an online flower essence magazine for more information.
